About

Scott Nodwell

Clinical counsellor, author, and supervisor. Over a decade of experience at the intersection of neurodiversity, complex trauma, and depth psychology.

Professional Background

Scott Nodwell is a PACFA-registered clinical counsellor with over a decade of direct clinical experience. He holds a Master of Counselling from the University of Notre Dame Australia, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia.

With more than 8,000 hours of direct therapeutic practice, Scott has worked across youth mental health, family therapy, community counselling, and clinical leadership. He has held senior clinical and management roles in both government-funded and community health settings, including headspace, Youth Focus, and Communicare.

His clinical work is characterised by an integrative approach that bridges evidence-based practice with the deeper dimensions of human experience. He draws on attachment theory, schema therapy, polyvagal theory, Jungian depth psychology, and contemporary neuroscience to work with clients navigating complex trauma, neurodevelopmental difference, identity confusion, and relational difficulty.

Beyond direct clinical work, Scott is a prolific scholarly writer and author. His published articles span depth psychology, neurodiversity, complex trauma, and the philosophical foundations of psychotherapy. His forthcoming books include the 8 Lines series on personal boundaries and self-relationship, clinical guides on ADHD and narcissistic abuse recovery, and explorations of depth psychology and symbolic process.

Clinical Philosophy

My approach to therapy is grounded in the conviction that effective clinical work must honour both the empirical and the experiential. I integrate evidence-based frameworks — attachment theory, schema therapy, cognitive-behavioural approaches — with the depth traditions that attend to meaning, symbol, and the unconscious dimensions of human life.

I believe that lasting therapeutic change requires more than symptom management. It requires an honest encounter with the patterns, wounds, and defences that shape how we relate to ourselves and others. This is particularly important when working with neurodivergent clients, whose experiences are often pathologised rather than understood, and whose relationship with their own identity deserves a more nuanced and affirming clinical lens.

As a supervisor, I bring the same integrative philosophy to the development of other practitioners. I believe that clinical supervision should be both rigorous and reflective — attending to the quality of formulation and intervention while also holding space for the practitioner as a person doing inherently demanding work.

As a writer, I aim to bridge the gap between academic psychology and lived experience. My articles and books are written for both clinicians and the thoughtful general reader, drawing on neuroscience, philosophy, and clinical observation to illuminate the architecture of human struggle and growth.
