This article examines the activation-fatigue pattern through depth psychology, drawing upon Jung's concept of enantiodromia—the transformation of psychological phenomena into their opposites—Hillman's puer-senex polarity, and contemporary understanding of dopaminergic dysregulation. We synthesise neurobiological research on executive function depletion with archetypal theory to propose that the ADHD experience represents an intensified form of universal psychological polarity. The resource model of cognitive-energetic functioning is integrated with depth psychological perspectives on compensatory adaptation. Clinical approaches working with rather than against the dialectic are presented, including strategies for medication management, life structuring, and relationship navigation within the activation-fatigue cycle. Energy seems either excessive or absent, rarely regulated—what Barkley (2015) describes as a fundamental deficit in self-regulation rather than attention per se.
This oscillation—between what we will term "activation" and "fatigue"—represents not merely symptom of neurological disorder but fundamental dialectic with psychological as well as biological dimensions. Understanding this dialectic through depth psychology offers perspectives that purely neurobiological approaches may miss.
The ADHD individual experiences themselves as fundamentally inconsistent: capable of extraordinary achievement one day, unable to complete basic tasks the next. This inconsistency creates profound confusion for both the individual and those around them. Family members, employers, and even therapists may struggle to understand how the same person who produced brilliant work under deadline pressure cannot manage to pay bills on time or maintain basic household organisation.
This article proposes that ADHD represents an intensified expression of archetypal polarities present in all human experience. The activation-fatigue pattern reflects what Jung (1966) termed enantiodromia—the tendency of things to transform into their opposite—operating at heightened intensity. Clinical approaches that work with rather than against this dialectic may prove more effective than interventions attempting to flatten it.

This article situates ADHD within a depth psychology framework, drawing on the psychoanalytic traditions of Freud, Klein, and Bion to explore the activation-fatigue dialectic as a psychological phenomenon. Freud’s (1923) concept of the ego’s regulatory functions provides a foundational understanding of internal control mechanisms. Klein’s (1940) object relations theory, particularly her notion of internal objects, elucidates how early relational patterns influence affect regulation. Bion’s (1962) theory of thinking and containment further contextualises how unconscious anxieties are processed and managed. Together, these concepts inform the article’s exploration of ADHD as a dynamic interplay of psychic activation and emotional fatigue.

This explains the paradox of hyperfocus: the same individual who cannot sustain attention to necessary tasks may engage with stimulating material for hours without break.
Yet even stimulation-driven engagement eventually depletes resources. The activated state feels unstoppable until suddenly it stops; the fatigued state feels permanent until suddenly energy returns. This unpredictability creates profound anxiety: one cannot rely on one's own capacities from day to day.
Understanding ADHD through enantiodromia suggests that attempts to eliminate oscillation may prove futile—the polarity is inherent in the system. More promising approaches work with the dialectic, seeking to moderate amplitude and find sustainable rhythm rather than impossible stability. The goal becomes not elimination of the swing but conscious relationship to it: learning to anticipate transitions, recognise early signs, and structure life to accommodate rather than resist the pattern.
The Puer-Senex Polarity
Hillman's (1979) exploration of the puer-senex polarity provides additional framework. The ADHD individual often manifests an intensified puer: abundant creativity, infectious enthusiasm, attraction to novelty, difficulty with routine and structure. The activated ADHD state embodies puer energy: everything seems possible, limitations feel irrelevant, creative vision flows freely. During activation, the ADHD individual may initiate multiple projects, envision grand possibilities, inspire others with their enthusiasm.
Yet the senex intrudes forcefully during fatigue states: the exhaustion carries depressive quality, the sense that nothing matters, that effort is pointless. The same projects that seemed so compelling during activation now feel burdensome. The creative vision that inspired enthusiasm now appears as evidence of unrealistic fantasy. The senex judges the puer harshly: why start what cannot be finished? Why imagine what cannot be achieved?
Healthy functioning requires integration of puer and senex, each moderating the other's excesses. ADHD may represent difficulty achieving this integration, with consciousness swinging between poles rather than holding both in creative tension. The ADHD individual alternates between identification with puer (during activation) and identification with senex (during fatigue), rarely achieving the mature position that honours both.
Therapeutic work with the puer-senex polarity involves helping the client develop awareness of both archetypal positions without full identification with either. The activated puer needs tempering with senex wisdom: yes, new projects are exciting, but finishing existing ones matters too. The depressed senex needs enlivening with puer spirit: yes, limitations are real, but possibility remains genuine.
The Heroic Pattern and the Return
The activation state in ADHD often carries heroic quality: the individual feels invincible, capable of extraordinary feats, filled with energy for ambitious projects. This corresponds to Campbell's (1949) hero in the ascending phase of the journey—called to adventure, crossing thresholds, achieving the seemingly impossible.
Yet every hero's journey includes descent. The activation-driven hero eventually exhausts their resources, finding themselves in what Campbell termed the "belly of the whale"—the dark passage where previous capacities fail. The ADHD fatigue state represents this descent: the hero depleted, requiring reconstitution before the next adventure.
Campbell emphasised that the hero's journey is not complete without the return: bringing the gifts of the adventure back to ordinary life, integrating the extraordinary into the everyday. For the ADHD individual, this return phase proves particularly challenging. The activated state generates insights, achievements, creative products; the fatigued state struggles to consolidate and integrate them. Projects remain unfinished; insights are not applied; achievements are not built upon.

Build in recovery buffers before exhaustion forces them: Rather than riding activation until complete collapse, the conscious ADHD individual learns to schedule recovery proactively. This might mean building rest days into project timelines, setting predetermined stopping points, or creating accountability structures that enforce reasonable limits.
Protecting the Fatigue Phase
The fatigue phase, typically experienced as unwelcome or pathological, serves essential function: the system requires recovery. Therapeutic work helps clients:
Accept fatigue as necessary rather than failure: The ADHD individual often experiences fatigue with profound shame: others seem not to need such extensive recovery. Reframing fatigue as the natural consequence of the ADHD nervous system's particular organisation—not moral failing—reduces self-pathologising and supports appropriate self-care.
Reduce demands during recovery periods: The fatigued ADHD individual cannot perform at activated levels. Attempting to do so creates frustration and extends recovery time. The Transcendent Function
Jung's (1957) transcendent function—the capacity to hold opposites in creative tension until something new emerges—offers therapeutic goal. Rather than eliminating the dialectic, the aim becomes holding activation and fatigue in awareness simultaneously, neither identified with one state nor fighting the other.
This developed capacity allows the ADHD individual to:
Anticipate transitions rather than being overwhelmed by them: The transcendent function provides observing awareness that recognises patterns without full identification. The ADHD individual develops capacity to notice "I am becoming activated" or "fatigue is approaching" rather than simply being activation or fatigue.
Moderate extreme swings through conscious intervention: This awareness creates space for choice. The individual approaching activation can implement limiting structures; the individual approaching fatigue can proactively reduce demands. Whilst the dialectic cannot be eliminated, its amplitude can be moderated through conscious engagement.
Extract wisdom from both states: Each pole offers particular gifts and insights. Activation reveals what truly engages and inspires; fatigue reveals actual limits and genuine needs. The transcendent function enables learning from both rather than rejecting either.
Find the third position that transcends the opposition: Beyond identification with either activation or fatigue lies a position that honours both: the mature ADHD individual who accepts their particular neurological organisation, neither fighting it nor surrendering to it, but working skilfully with its actual characteristics.

Understanding that their particular challenge represents intensified form of human pattern—not alien defect—transforms relationship to the condition. DBT's emphasis on holding dialectics—"both/and" rather than "either/or"—applies directly. The ADHD client learns to affirm: "I am both capable of extraordinary focus and prone to distraction; I have both abundant energy and need for extended recovery; I am both powerfully activated and deeply fatigued, often in rapid succession."
These dialectical affirmations replace the tyranny of "either/or" thinking that creates unnecessary suffering. The ADHD individual no longer needs to prove they are either consistently competent or consistently impaired; both are true simultaneously. This acceptance paradoxically enables more effective functioning: energy previously consumed by internal conflict becomes available for actual adaptation.

The depth psychology perspective on medication emphasises working with rather than replacing the dialectic. Medication that moderates extreme activation whilst supporting basic functioning during fatigue serves genuine therapeutic purpose. Medication that attempts to impose continuous activation—or that flattens all oscillation—may work against the ADHD individual's actual neurological organisation.
Integrating medication with dialectical approaches means: adjusting expectations to acknowledge that medication moderates rather than eliminates the pattern; continuing to structure life to accommodate oscillation even with medication; recognising that medication dosing may need adjustment based on current phase of the cycle; accepting that medication represents one tool among many rather than complete solution.
Relational Implications
The ADHD Individual in Relationship
The activation-fatigue dialectic profoundly affects intimate relationships (Hallowell & Ratey, 2011). Partners of ADHD individuals often experience confusion and frustration: the person they fell in love with during activation seems to disappear during fatigue, replaced by someone withdrawn and unavailable. The activated ADHD partner may be intensely present, engaging, creative; the fatigued ADHD partner may be distant, irritable, overwhelmed.
